Katherine G. Bailey, 86, died after a long illness on Sunday, September 17, 2017 at the Shell Point Retirement Community in Fort Myers, FL where she and her husband Jack Bailey have lived for the past ten years. Kay was born on January 4, 1931 in Pittsburgh, PA to Clara Titzel Gerwig and Theodore Gerwig. She was adopted and raised by her aunt, Henrietta Titzel Campbell in Pittsburgh.

Kay received her Bachelors Degree in Chemistry from Wells College in Aurora, NY in 1952, and later in life, a Masters Degree in Library Science from Case Western Reserve University in Cleveland, Ohio. Kay and Jack lived in Cleveland for 25 years where they raised their family. Kay volunteered for many years at both the Cleveland Museum of Natural History and the Cleveland Museum of Art, pursuing her life long love of nature and art. After Kay moved to Sanibel, FL, she volunteered at the J. N. Ding Darling National Wildlife Refuge. She also served on the board of Wells College. Kay was a life-long Chautauquan where she maintained a summer residence at Chautauqua Institution in Chautauqua, NY. After her children were grown, she became a world traveler with her husband and they visited over 80 countries including New Guinea, Yemen and Nepal.

Kay is survived by John T. Bailey, her husband of 65 years; her son Theodore G. Bailey; her daughter Mary K. Bailey; her son-in-law Toby Welles; and her grandchildren Clara Bailey, Helen Bailey, Eric Bailey, and Henry Welles.

A memorial service will be held next summer at Chautauqua, NY. In lieu of flowers, please send a donation to Chautauqua Institution, Chautauqua, NY, a place Kay loved all her life, a love she passed on to her children and grandchildren.
