On your mark: Annual 10K Race 4 F.I.S.H. scheduled for this weekend

Hundreds of runners will pound the pavement for the 9th annual 10K Race 4 F.I.S.H. which is set for Saturday, Oct. 28 at 7:30 a.m. the Community House.

According to Ed Ridlehoover, chair of the 10K Race Committee, this year's track has been slightly changed due to debris from Hurricane Irma.

"It took us awhile to get the route because we are limited on the streets and places we could run. We worked with the city very closely and the city worked with us to get the route done and all the details put into place for the safety and security of the route while the runners are out there," Ridlehoover said.

The 6.2 mile race will begin at the Community House then the runners will continue down to Periwinkle Way, Casa Ybel then to Tarpon Bay Road. Runners will then turn around and come back to the Community House.

Ridlehoover said they will close one lane on Periwinkle Way for the race.

Gold, silver and bronze sand dollars will be awarded to first, second and third place in each of the 15 age categories for both men and women which range from nine and under to 70 and older - a total of 98 awards will be handed out. All finishers will receive a medallion.

At the end of the race, food and drinks will be available to all runners as well as a goodie bag which consists of a coupon book, a Sanibel Captiva Chamber of Commerce magazine, koozies, a bag of shells from She Sells Sea Shells and a water bottle.

Ridlehoover said the race would not be possible without the help from the city, sponsors, volunteers and the Fort Myers Track Club who time the event and assist with the set up.

"They set up the start and finish line, they help with registration and they make sure the water tables are out. They go and they make a pass on the course before the race, they'll make a sweep after the race to make sure everything is clean and picked up," he said.

Participants can register online at ftmyerstrackclub.com. Printable entry forms are available at fishofsancap.org. The entry fee is $35 from Oct. 22-27. On race day, the cost is $40. The first 500 registrants are guaranteed a t-shirt designed by Dave Horton.

The funds raised from the event goes to F.I.S.H. of San-Cap to help them with their myriad of services for residents.

"We keep it on the island," Ridlehoover said. "Over 93 percent of our income goes to charity."

Last year alone, F.I.S.H. of San-Cap completed 14,399 service calls for over 2,700 individuals. Some of those services included utilizing 131,625 pounds of food which benefitted 502 families, distributing 1,063 backpacks to island youth, delivering 2,633 meals to island residents and providing 366 instances of emergency financial assistance.
