Marilyn Adams West
March 1, 2018

Marilyn Adams West was born in Miami, Florida on June 8, 1935 and died in Memphis, TN on February 27, 2018 after a long illness. She was the daughter of Joseph Henry and Louise Knight Adams. She was preceded in death by her parents, her sisters, Nancy and Jean, and her brother, Joe. Marilyn lived a storied childhood in her family's El Comodoro Hotel. She would tell you it was both rich in varied, often eccentric company but also lonely and isolating from typical childhood relationships.

Marilyn graduated from Stevens College and the University of Miami where she was a member of Chi Omega sorority. She met her loving husband of 58 years, Memphian, Richard Gary West at the University of Miami. They have four children: Richard Rick West (Lisa), Jennifer Sammons (Jack), Chris West (Ronda), Leah Jones (Les), and an adopted daughter, Susan Murrmann, all of whom live in Memphis, TN. She is also survived by eight Perfect Grandchildren: Ali, Ari, Dax, Jack, Neely, Eleanor, Townes and Parker and her wonderful brother and sister-in-law, Fred and Diane Smith.

Marilyn was an executive with her family business, Biscayne Kennel Club, president of almost every PTA of any school her children attended, a high school English and Journalism teacher, a ghost writer, proof-reader, photography enthusiast, and a computer nerd before it was a thing. She had a quick wit and a hot temper, the latter of which thankfully softened with age. Always intellectually curious, she possessed the consummate knowledge of the universe - which was annoying, but also helpful, and we will desperately miss her thoughtful counsel.

Marilyn and Gary divided their time between Memphis and Fort Myers, FL and for more than 40 years, her beloved Sanibel Island, FL. She will return very soon to sunny Sanibel where the Roseate Spoonbills and Herons have been patiently awaiting her arrival.

Marilyn wished to have no memorial service as she found them entirely too depressing.

In lieu of flowers, please consider a donation to St. Jude Children's Research Hospital.
