SCC to offer eight-week balance program from July to September

Sanibel Community Church will host a "Let's Get Moving - Moving for Better Balance" class on Wednesday afternoons for eight weeks, starting July 18.

To be held from 1:30 to 2:30 p.m. in Fellowship Hall, the program will improve balance, coordination and concentration. The classes utilize movements specifically adapted from an evidence-based fall prevention program developed by the Oregon Research Institute and Centers for Disease Control and Prevention.

The program has been shown to decrease falls, the risk of falling and the fear of falling. The forms emphasize weight shifting, postural alignment and coordinated movement to improve strength, balance and physical functioning.

Classes may be done seated, chair assisted and independently. The program consists of warm-up exercises, an eight-form routine, integrated movements and cool-down.

The classes will be led by Deb Stephens, faith community nurse and certified instructor.
