Vote for candidates who prioritize our environment

To the editor:

I first came to Sanibel in 1978 - 40 years ago. I vacationed here nearly every year after and purchased a home on the island in 2015. I now live here permanently.

As I coughed my way up the beach this morning during my walk, I was passed by two people wearing surgical masks to prevent inhaling the red tide toxins.

This morning I couldn't walk five feet without stepping on dead fish. Fish, turtles and sea birds are dying. The algae is coming our way around the lighthouse point. We're told not to eat the fish, swim in the water, or breathe the air.

For 50 years our leaders have ignored the problem, kicked the pollution can down the road, underfunded efforts to correct the issues, accepted money from big polluters, and averted their eyes and ears to the problems.

I protest, send donations to environmental organizations, and write to my federal and state representatives. I will also vote in the primary and general election for candidates who prioritize our environment in the hope that it isn't too late for our sanctuary island and the rest of Florida. Will you?
