Vote yes on half-penny sales tax

To the editor:

Sanibel voters, I'm certain, know the value of a good education. For about a $1 a week they can join all Lee County consumers in making a strong step forward to build some schools and enhance the reputation of our growing community.

The normal funding sources, local and state governments, have not provided adequate funding to build schools for our children. In fact, the state has never restored capital funding of $500 million withheld in the economic downturn.

Meanwhile, the enrollment continues to grow at the rate of 1,800 children yearly, about the size of a high school. Consequently, the Lee County School District currently is forced to house children in 188 trailers! What is the next cutback? Split sessions!

The only viable solution at this time is a sales tax increase of a half-penny to be voted on Nov. 6.

As patriotic citizens who care about our youth and the future of our country, we must vote yes!
