For nearly 20 years, The Sanctuary Charity Classic has been a fundraising success and testament to the generosity and commitment of The Sanctuary Golf Club's membership and its partnering sponsors.

The tournament proceeds are directed to the Charitable Foundation of the Islands, whose mission is to make sure friends and neighbors in need on the islands are cared for, especially in times of crisis.

Held on Jan. 26, the event was a record-breaking success, garnering over $163,000 for the island communities. Despite blustery winds and cool temperatures, over 130 people gathered for a gourmet brunch and 18 holes of golf, followed by an awards reception. This year's winners are: Doug and Paige Babcock and David and Joan Burrows, couple winners; Jamie Doss, Ross Selby, Brooks Selby and Jeff Muddell, gross winners; and Steve Greenstein, Paul Munns, Jeff Mistler and Bob Rohl, net winners.

But the real winners are the non-profit organizations that benefit from the proceeds, like F.I.S.H. of Sanibel-Captiva, Community Housing and Resources, city employee scholarships, the Bailey-Mathews National Shell Museum, Children's Education Center of the Islands, The Sanibel School and more.

"The Sanctuary Golf Club's members overwhelmingly embrace this event, allowing the course to be closed each year on this special Saturday. They are exceptionally generous and committed to this fundraiser. The fact that this is the 17th year demonstrates the dedication of the members to make The Sanctuary Charity Classic a success," Chief Operating Officer Ken Kouril said.

The Charitable Foundation of the Islands has the role of reaching out to the non-profit community, structuring grant guidelines, assessing applications and assuring that the funds are used to the best and highest purpose with tangible impact. It is also an army of volunteers during the annual fundraiser.

"It's a great partnership," Al Hanser, founder of the Charitable Foundation of the Islands, said."It's a win-win for all involved, and we could not be more grateful to the members and friends of The Sanctuary for offering our community this kind of exemplary support."

Some of this year's sponsors were The Sanctuary Golf Club, Tom and Elaine August, Al and Sally Hanser, the Sanibel-Captiva Trust Company, Roger and Lori Bahnik, Butch and Jackie Bingham, Ron and Debbie Brooks, Paul and Andria Heafy, Jim and Gaye Pigott, and John and Donna Schubert.
