As of last week, openings still remained for the adult and youth events at the annual Galloway Captiva Triathlon, set for Sept. 7-8 on the grounds of the South Seas Island Resort and surrounding areas.

It is a family-friendly fitness weekend with more than 850 adults and 225 child competitors.

"We have 23 spots open for the adult race and 20 spots for the kids' race," Race Director Angie Ferguson, with organizer and area non-profit corporation Southwest Florida Events, said on Aug. 28.

On Sept. 7, the adults will swim a quarter-mile in the Gulf of Mexico, just offshore from the northern end of the resort; bike 10 miles along the paved roads of Captiva; and run a 5K along the Gulf, Redfish Pass and the resort golf's course on a combination course of hard sand and pavers. The elite amateur athletes who posted qualifying times at a USAT sanctioned event will take off first in their own wave.

The next day will be the Splash n' Dash Kids Race. Participants ages 6-8 will compete in a 100-yard swim and half-mile run, ages 9-10 will complete in a 100-yard swim and mile run, and ages 11-13 will complete in a 200-yard swim and mile run. This course will not include a bicycling portion this year.

Both events are sanctioned by USA Triathlon, and participants must be members or obtain a one-day waiver. Information about purchasing the waiver can be found on the website when signing up.

Last year, a total of 500 people took part in the adult and youth events combined.

A portion of the proceeds raised will go to supporting Community Cooperative's Growing Healthy Kids Programs, providing emergency food for more than 6,000 local children and their families each school year with Mobile Food Pantries. The program helps reduce child hunger and improves health and academic outcomes while providing support for children and families in need in Lee County.

In total, the event has raised about $211,500 for Community Cooperative over the years.

Spectators are welcome to come out and root on the participants.

Both they and the participants are reminded that Captiva Drive will close at 6:45 a.m., so everyone will need to be at the north end before 6:30 a.m. or they will be unable to take part in or watch the events.

Galloway Family of Dealerships is the title sponsor and sponsor for the Galloway Captiva Triathlon. The Gunter Firm is the sponsor for the Galloway Captiva Triathlon Splash n' Dash Kids Race.
